Basic Barbering
All students are required to complete 1200 hours of training as designated by the Maryland laws. Our courses include a complete basic barbering program, haircutting/styling for male and female clients, color / highlighting, and permanent waving. Theory instructions are taught under our prescribed textbook. Our student/teacher ratio is 6 to 1.
Curriculum
Note: The 1200 Hour Curriculum below follows the requirements of the Maryland Higher Education Commission and the Maryland State Board of Barber Examiners.

Hair Cutting | 750 | During course hours students will learn basic principals of hair cutting and styling, hair cutting techniques along with tool mastery, haircut finishing work i.e. shaving outline areas, head shaving and safety precautions for hair cutting and styling. |
Barber Science | 100 | During course hours students will learn bacteriology, infection control, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, electricity and light therapy and properties and disorders of the skin and hair. |
Shaving | 100 | During course hours students will learn general sanitation and safety precautions associated with shaving, standard cutting positions and strokes with a straight razor, to identify the 14 shaving areas of the face, facial and neck shaves as well as proper state board set up for shaving. |
Shampooing, Applications of Toners and Creams | 75 | During course hours students will learn services associated with treatments of the hair and scalp, to identify different shampoo conditions, rinses and tonics, PH factors as they relate to hair care products, proper draping procedures and scalp massage techniques and treatments. |
Chemical Texture Services | 60 | During course hours students will learn effects of chemical texture services on the hair, the factors of hair analysis for chemical texture services, to identify the similarities and differences between chemical texture services and to perform proper setup and procedures pertaining to permanent waving, reformation curl and hair relaxing services. Note: Students are required to perform 6 chemical services prior to the completion of their 1200 course hours |
Hair Coloring | 40 | During course hours students will learn principals of color theory as they relate to hair coloring, identify classification of hair color, to explain the actions of lighteners on the hair, to identify the products used in lightening and hair coloring, correct procedures for applying hair color and lighteners, identify products to color facial hair and safety precautions used in hair color and lightening. Note: Students are required to perform 6 Hair Color services prior to the completion of their 1200 course hours |
Cleaning, Coloring and Styling of Hair Pieces | 30 | During course hours students will learn reasons why men may purchase hair pieces, identify types of hair used in hair piece construction, how to measure a client for a hair piece, fitting, cutting in and cleaning of hair pieces. |
Review of Maryland State Board Laws, Rules and Regulations | 30 | During course hours students will learn methods of preparing for State Board examinations, to identify the primary objectives of State Barber Board rules and regulations and identify the State Barber Board rules and regulations in the state of Maryland. |
Barbershop Management | 15 | During course hours students will learn the functions of a barbershop owner/manager, booth rental vs. self employment, identify types of business ownership, the features of a business plan and the factors associated with setting up a barbershop. |
